LC Amendment Cost Calculator

Forecast the total cost of extending or amending your Letter of Credit based on global bank fee schedules and current interest rates.

Quick Answer
An LC amendment cost includes a flat amendment fee (typically $50–$150), SWIFT communication charges, and pro-rated confirmation or usance fees if the validity period or amount increases. Total costs depend on the issuing bank's country and the complexity of the changes requested.

Overview & methodology

Why model LC amendment costs?

In trade finance, unexpected extensions or increases in credit value can significantly erode profit margins. A 30-day extension on a confirmed LC doesn't just cost the amendment fee; it also triggers additional confirmation premiums for the extended period. For usance LCs, it increases the total interest accrued. Modelling these costs helps in deciding whether to amend an existing LC or request the buyer to issue a new one.

Numerical Example: 30-Day Extension on $100k Confirmed LC

This example shows how confirmation premiums can often exceed the bank's base amendment fee for higher-value transactions.

Flat Amendment Fee$100.00
SWIFT Transmission$50.00
Addl. Confirmation (1.5% p.a.)(($100k * 1.5% * 30/360))$125.00
Total Amendment Cost$275.00

Standard Banking Practices

Fees are calculated based on the ICC Uniform Customs and Practice for Documentary Credits (UCP 600) Article 10, which governs the amendment process. Banks usually charge separate fees for 'Amendment Advice' and 'Swift Communication' for each instance an amendment is issued.
