CBM to CBF: Cubic Meters ↔ Cubic Feet Conversion

Cubic meters (CBM, or m³) is the global standard volume unit for ocean and air freight quotations. Cubic feet (CBF, or ft³) still shows up on US domestic trucking rate cards, on some intra-Americas trade lanes and inside NVOCC tariffs quoting per-CBF LCL rates. Converting between the two accurately matters because chargeable weight, LCL vs FCL breakeven and container fit are all calculated in CBM.

The exact conversion factor

1 CBM = 35.3146667 CBF. For shipping quotes, use 35.315. To go the other way, 1 CBF = 0.0283168 CBM.

• CBM → CBF: multiply by 35.315
• CBF → CBM: divide by 35.315 (or multiply by 0.0283168)

Worked examples

A shipment measures 12.5 CBM. Converted: 12.5 × 35.315 = 441.44 CBF. If your LCL rate is quoted at USD 4.50/CBF, that's USD 1,986 in ocean freight.

Going the other way: a 500 CBF consolidation is 500 ÷ 35.315 = 14.16 CBM. That crosses the typical 12–14 CBM breakeven, so FCL is likely cheaper.

Container capacities in both units

Real-world stow factor is usually 85–90% of nominal capacity because of carton geometry, palletisation and non-stackable cargo.

Why carriers on different lanes quote different units

Ocean carriers on Asia–Europe and intra-Asia trade lanes have quoted LCL in per-CBM/W/M since containerisation standardised on metric. US-flag NVOCCs and some LATAM operators kept CBF on legacy tariffs because domestic trucking and warehousing still bill in cubic feet. Air carriers are always metric per IATA TACT Rules - volumetric weight uses the 6,000 cm³/kg divisor, not any CBF equivalent.
