Customs, Duty & HS Code Tools
Estimate import duty, VAT/GST and true landed cost across the EU, UK, USA, India and the GCC - plus look up HS codes and convert between CIF, FOB and CFR.
Landed cost is more than the invoice value. It is CIF (or the customs value used by the destination) plus duty, plus VAT/GST charged on the duty-inclusive base, plus clearance, port handling and inland freight. Getting the stack right matters because each layer taxes the previous one.
Duty rates come from the destination's tariff schedule keyed by 6- or 10-digit HS code. The 6-digit heading is harmonized worldwide (WCO); country-specific digits and any preferential rates (GSP, EBA, FTAs) sit at the 8–10 digit level. Our HS Code Lookup covers 150+ commonly-shipped headings across 40+ chapters.
Customs valuation follows the WTO Agreement - normally transaction value, adjusted for royalties, commissions, and assists. When switching an offer from FOB to CIF, insurance is conventionally computed on 110% of CIF (Institute Cargo Clauses) to give the buyer margin above landed value.
Frequently asked questions
How is import duty calculated?
Duty = Customs Value × Duty Rate. Customs value is typically CIF (invoice + freight + insurance) but the EU uses CIF, the USA uses FOB, and countries diverge on how they treat royalties and assists. VAT/GST is then applied on duty-inclusive value in most regimes.
What is landed cost?
Landed cost = CIF value + duty + VAT/GST + clearance fees + inland freight + insurance to final destination. It is the true delivered cost to your warehouse and is what you should use for pricing and margin decisions.
How do I find the right HS code?
Start from the 6-digit heading (harmonized worldwide), then apply the destination country's 8- or 10-digit subheading. Use the General Rules of Interpretation (GRI 1–6) to resolve classification conflicts. For binding rulings, apply to the destination customs authority (BTI in the EU, CBP Ruling in the USA).
How do I convert FOB to CIF?
CIF = FOB + Freight + Insurance. Insurance is normally computed on 110% of CIF (per Incoterms® 2020 and Institute Cargo Clauses convention). Our CIF/FOB Converter solves the equation both ways.
