Petroleum coke is the same molecule wearing two very different jackets: a low-sulphur anode-grade feedstock for aluminium smelters and a high-sulphur fuel-grade destined for cement kilns and power plants.
Anode grade
Sulphur under 3.5%, HGI 100 or above, low metals, calcined. Priced against Chinese and Middle Eastern smelter demand.
Fuel grade
Sulphur 4-7%, HGI variable, green coke. Priced against thermal coal and cement demand, with sulphur discounts stacking up fast above 6%.
