Overview & methodology

Does every Indian exporter need an IEC?
Yes, the Import Export Code (IEC) is a mandatory 10-digit identification number issued by the DGFT. In 2026, all new IECs are issued as the entity's PAN (Permanent Account Number). Without a valid IEC, Indian customs will not permit the filing of a Shipping Bill or Bill of Entry on ICEGATE.

DGFT IEC Format Rules

Under the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) 2023, the IEC has been harmonized with PAN. A valid IEC must be exactly 10 characters. Legacy IECs were numeric-only, while new PAN-based IECs are alphanumeric (e.g., ABCDE1234F).
