Frequently asked questions
What GST rate applies to imports into India?
Imports attract IGST (Integrated GST) at the same rate as domestic supply. Common rates are 5% (essential goods), 12%, 18% (most manufactured goods), and 28% (luxury/demerit goods). IGST is levied on CIF value + Basic Customs Duty (BCD) + Social Welfare Surcharge.
What is the HSN code?
The Harmonized System of Nomenclature (HSN) code is India's product classification system, aligned with the WCO HS at the 6-digit level and extended to 8 digits for Indian customs and GST purposes. The HSN code determines the applicable GST rate and BCD rate.
How is India Basic Customs Duty calculated?
BCD = CIF value (in INR) × BCD rate. Then Social Welfare Surcharge = 10% × BCD. Then IGST = (CIF + BCD + SWS) × IGST rate. Use the Landed Cost Calculator for the full stacked calculation across multiple destinations.
