Overview & methodology

How import taxes stack

Most regimes charge duty on the CIF value (or CIF + landing), then charge VAT/GST on CIF + duty. Some jurisdictions add anti-dumping, safeguard, cess or Merchandise Processing Fees on top. This tool models the common EU/UK/GCC/India/US patterns; always validate against the destination customs schedule for the specific HS line.

Frequently asked questions

How is EU import duty calculated?

EU customs value is the CIF value at first port of entry. Duty rate comes from the TARIC classification (10-digit). VAT (usually 19–25% depending on member state) is then charged on duty-inclusive value plus any excise duty. Our calculator supports EU, UK, USA, India and GCC regimes.

Does the USA use CIF or FOB for customs value?

The USA uses transaction value based on FOB (price paid or payable, excluding freight/insurance) in most cases. Duty is applied to FOB; freight and insurance are added afterwards to reach landed cost.
