Overview & methodology

How to calculate import duties in 2026?

Import duty starts with the customs value and the applicable tariff rate. The WTO Valuation Agreement generally prioritises transaction value with required adjustments; national rules determine freight treatment. VAT or GST may use a duty-inclusive base. US 19 CFR governs separate CBP fees. This calculator provides indicative estimates, not a binding customs assessment.

Simplified import tax formulas

Assessable value = entered value x (1 + selected landing adjustment / 100)Duty = assessable value x duty rate / 100Additional duty = assessable value x additional duty rate / 100VAT base = assessable value + duty + additional duty + fees (when duty-inclusive)VAT/GST = selected tax base x tax rate / 100VAT base = entered CIF value (when not duty-inclusive)Landed cost = entered CIF value + duty + additional duty + fees + VAT/GST

Simplified model only. US valuation may exclude international freight; do not automatically use CIF. India has no notional landing uplift under Notification 91/2017-Customs (N.T.). Enter applicable fees separately.

How do India, GCC and US import duty regimes differ?

While the EU and UK calculate VAT on the duty-inclusive value, the USA does not have a federal VAT on imports. India applies Basic Customs Duty (BCD) plus Integrated GST (IGST) and Social Welfare Surcharge (SWS), making it one of the more complex regimes to estimate manually.

Frequently asked questions

How is EU import duty calculated?

EU customs value is the CIF value at first port of entry. Duty rate comes from the TARIC classification (10-digit). VAT (usually 19–25% depending on member state) is then charged on duty-inclusive value plus any excise duty. Our calculator supports EU, UK, USA, India and GCC regimes.

Does the USA use CIF or FOB for customs value?

The USA uses transaction value based on FOB (price paid or payable, excluding freight/insurance) in most cases. Duty is applied to FOB; freight and insurance are added afterwards to reach landed cost.

How is import VAT calculated in the UK and GCC?

UK import VAT is 20% of the customs value plus duty and any excise. Most GCC states apply the 5% common external tariff on CIF value, then VAT on CIF plus duty: 5% in the UAE and Oman, 10% in Bahrain and 15% in Saudi Arabia (Kuwait and Qatar have no VAT yet). Pick the regime in the calculator and adjust the VAT field to the local rate.

How does India stack customs duty and IGST?

India adds Basic Customs Duty (BCD) on the assessable value, then a Social Welfare Surcharge of 10% of BCD, then IGST on the total of assessable value + BCD + SWS. Enter SWS in the Additional duty field as a percentage of the assessable value (for 10% BCD, that is 1%).
